Matthew 5: 1 - 12

1 Jesus saw the crowds and went up a hill, where he sat down. His disciples gathered round him, 2 and he began to teach them:

3 “Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor;
the Kingdom of heaven belongs to them!
4 Happy are those who mourn;
God will comfort them!
5 Happy are those who are humble;
they will receive what God has promised!
6 Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what God requires;
God will satisfy them fully!
7 Happy are those who are merciful to others;
God will be merciful to them!
8 Happy are the pure in heart;
they will see God!
9 Happy are those who work for peace;
God will call them his children!
10 Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires;
the Kingdom of heaven belongs to them!
11 “Happy are you when people insult you and persecute you and tell all kinds of evil lies against you because you are my followers. 12 Be happy and glad, for a great reward is kept for you in heaven. This is how the prophets who lived before you were persecuted.

Already Theirs, Already Ours.

When our Lord was proclaiming the blessedness of the poor he was correct in saying that the kingdom of heaven is theirs, not that it will be theirs. It is theirs by an unimpeachable right.

O you poor, O you humble, let your souls glory in their humility and scorn all the lofty dignities of the world which lie so far beneath their feet. You are on the point of being taken up into heaven and is this the moment you would choose to sink back at last into the mire? The whole court of the saints is waiting to greet you, and would you now prefer the company of demons?

How wretched is the man who, “when he was in honor, did not appreciate it and so can be compared to a senseless beast and has become like one” (Ps 48:21). This verse clearly refers to those who have become honorable in the sight of heaven, but who have subsequently become so blinded that they have come to look upon their poverty as misery and their humility as cowardice.

But to you who look upon your poverty as a friend, and find your pleasure in humility of spirit, to you Truth unchangeable gives the certainty of possessing the kingdom of heaven. He declares it belongs to you and he guards it safe, laid up in readiness for you. All you have to do is to guard the hope of it deep in your heart to the very end, with the help of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom belongs all honor and glory, through endless ages.

Blessed Guerric of Igny (ca. 1070–1157) was educated in the humanities and theology. An esteemed and seasoned scholar, he was encouraged to enter monastic life by Bernard of Clairvaux. He was elected abbot of Igny in 1138.

All Loving God

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.
