25 Great crowds accompanied him on his way and he turned and spoke to them.

26 'Anyone who comes to me without hating father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and his own life too, cannot be my disciple.

27 No one who does not carry his cross and come after me can be my disciple.

28 'And indeed, which of you here, intending to build a tower, would not first sit down and work out the cost to see if he had enough to complete it?

29 Otherwise, if he laid the foundation and then found himself unable to finish the work, anyone who saw it would start making fun of him and saying,

30 "Here is someone who started to build and was unable to finish."

31 Or again, what king marching to war against another king would not first sit down and consider whether with ten thousand men he could stand up to the other who was advancing against him with twenty thousand?

32 If not, then while the other king was still a long way off, he would send envoys to sue for peace.

33 So in the same way, none of you can be my disciple without giving up all that he owns.

Tripped Up.

The biggest deal breaker in today’s Gospel may not be about hating loved ones, although there is that. No, I believe Jesus saves the most difficult line for last: "Everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.” A conundrum, to say the least. Impossible, to be realistic.

Pondering how one might do this, like a hiker on a trail socked in with fog, I trip over what my greatest obstacles might be. It is not my laptop or my coffeemaker, although at certain hours of the day both seem vital. It is not my smart phone or my car. If I listen deeply to Jesus, and begin with the end in mind, the truth appears. In addition to the fog and the boulders that block my way, there are other more difficult things to divest myself of. Fear, distrust, arrogance, and pride are stuffed tightly into the bag of my soul—and I cannot seem to surrender them. This is not a simple rationalization to give up and keep my material things. It is a natural human response to a challenging invitation from God.

How do we truly renounce any of the possessions that possess us? Like the sun burning off the mists that block our view, the light of Christ reveals the way forward. Being part of the great crowds that travel with Jesus, we choose to stumble on, following him in hope.

All Loving God

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.
