1 He said to his disciples, 'Causes of falling are sure to come, but alas for the one through whom they occur!

2 It would be better for such a person to be thrown into the sea with a millstone round the neck than to be the downfall of a single one of these little ones.

3 Keep watch on yourselves! 'If your brother does something wrong, rebuke him and, if he is sorry, forgive him.

4 And if he wrongs you seven times a day and seven times comes back to you and says, "I am sorry," you must forgive him.'

5 The apostles said to the Lord, 'Increase our faith.'

6 The Lord replied, 'If you had faith like a mustard seed you could say to this mulberry tree, "Be uprooted and planted in the sea," and it would obey you.

Even a Little.

It is hard to miss the allusions to faith in today’s liturgy. The entrance antiphon reads, “The Saints of God persevered in loving brotherhood, for there was always one spirit in them, and one faith.” In his letter to Titus, St. Paul describes himself as a “slave and Apostle of Jesus Christ for the sake of the faith.” He then identifies Titus as “my true child in our common faith.” In the Gospel the disciples ask Jesus, “Increase our faith,” and he responds, “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed . . .” In the Prayer over the Offering, we pray, “confirm us in our faith.”

Faith has two dimensions. The first is the content of what we believe, the apostolic faith that has been handed on to us from generation to generation. The second is the act of faith by which we believe: our trust, confidence, and hope in God.

In today’s first reading, Saint Paul speaks about the content of faith; in the Gospel Jesus refers to the act of faith. The two are inseparable. If there is no content to faith, there is no Gospel; there is nothing to believe in. If we do not entrust ourselves to God in Christ, the content of faith remains dormant.

We need both content and trust. The trusting part of faith is the most difficult, but even a little faith that trusts in God is enough to move mountains.
