John 2: 13 - 22

13 It was almost time for the Passover Festival, so Jesus went to Jerusalem. 14 There in the Temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and pigeons, and also the moneychangers sitting at their tables. 15 So he made a whip from cords and drove all the animals out of the Temple, both the sheep and the cattle; he overturned the tables of the moneychangers and scattered their coins; 16 and he ordered those who sold the pigeons, “Take them out of here! Stop making my Father's house a market place!” 17 His disciples remembered that the scripture says, “My devotion to your house, O God, burns in me like a fire.”

18 The Jewish authorities replied with a question, “What miracle can you perform to show us that you have the right to do this?”

19 Jesus answered, “Tear down this Temple, and in three days I will build it again.”

20 “Are you going to build it again in three days?” they asked him. “It has taken 46 years to build this Temple!”

21 But the temple Jesus was speaking about was his body. 22 So when he was raised from death, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the scripture and what Jesus had said.

This Temple of God.

The façade of the Lateran Basilica proudly proclaims its status: Omnium urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput—Mother and head of all the churches of the city [of Rome] and the world!

On this feast day, we commemorate the basilica’s dedication by Pope Sylvester around 324. The cathedral church of the pope, it is considered the oldest and most honored basilica in Rome, constructed during the reign of Constantine. It is also known as St. John Lateran, in honor of St. John the Baptist, as well as the Church of the Holy Savior.

However, it is not just a dedication of a building we honor today: It is a celebration of the living temple, who is the Holy Savior. It is the celebration of an inestimable communion of holiness—the community of initiated Christians. “For the temple of God, which you are, is holy.”

In his recent Apostolic Exhortation, Gaudete et Exsultate, Pope Francis has this to say about the holiness of this temple of God:
Do not be afraid of holiness. It will take away none
of your energy, vitality or joy. On the contrary, you
will become what the Father had in mind when he
created you, and you will be faithful to your deepest
self. To depend on God sets us free from every form
of enslavement and leads us to recognize our great
dignity. (32)

Holiness is neither otherworldly nor an outward façade. It is our great dignity as a living temple of God.
