26 'As it was in Noah's day, so will it also be in the days of the Son of man.

27 People were eating and drinking, marrying wives and husbands, right up to the day Noah went into the ark, and the Flood came and destroyed them all.

28 It will be the same as it was in Lot's day: people were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building,

29 but the day Lot left Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and it destroyed them all.

30 It will be the same when the day comes for the Son of man to be revealed.

31 'When that Day comes, no one on the housetop, with his possessions in the house, must come down to collect them, nor must anyone in the fields turn back.

32 Remember Lot's wife.

33 Anyone who tries to preserve his life will lose it; and anyone who loses it will keep it safe.

34 I tell you, on that night, when two are in one bed, one will be taken, the other left;

35 when two women are grinding corn together, one will be taken, the other left.'

Bigger on the Inside.

In the Eastern icon, figures are presented in inverse perspective. Multiple angles are visible at once, such that shoulder joints and tops and sides of heads can be seen from the front. Buildings and mountains appear to tip forward. While in naturalistic depth perspective, the farther away things are, the smaller they appear, with inverse perspective, more distant details may appear bigger. Some might see this stylization as a kind of distortion, but actually it is quite logical, meant to make a theological statement. As when looking through a window, looking at an icon from different angles yields different views. The icon uses inverse perspective to show that in God, all is present, and yet all is whole. Our lives are not just a Cubist hodgepodge of pieces. Moreover, in the world of God, the closer one gets, or the deeper one goes, the wider the view. The inside is bigger than the outside.

When I entered the monastery, some people thought I was throwing my life away. Why be a celibate woman, in rural Indiana? They could not see then that embracing the limitations of the life meant a whole world opening up for me. So with the Christian life. When we embrace the limitations God gives us for our own good, some may think we are giving up everything fun: to lose is to lose. Christ and the Church may appear backward, or politically incorrect. Nevertheless, if we trust God’s ways, we will find the world imbued with more meaning than we can imagine.
