27 Some Sadducees -- those who argue that there is no resurrection -- approached him and they put this question to him,

28 'Master, Moses prescribed for us, if a man's married brother dies childless, the man must marry the widow to raise up children for his brother.

29 Well then, there were seven brothers; the first, having married a wife, died childless.

30 The second

31 and then the third married the widow. And the same with all seven, they died leaving no children.

32 Finally the woman herself died.

33 Now, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be, since she had been married to all seven?'

34 Jesus replied, 'The children of this world take wives and husbands,

35 but those who are judged worthy of a place in the other world and in the resurrection from the dead do not marry

36 because they can no longer die, for they are the same as the angels, and being children of the resurrection they are children of God.

37 And Moses himself implies that the dead rise again, in the passage about the bush where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.

38 Now he is God, not of the dead, but of the living; for to him everyone is alive.'

39 Some scribes then spoke up. They said, 'Well put, Master.'

40 They did not dare to ask him any more questions.

Alive and Lively.

Sitting in a coffee shop across from my two-year-old’s preschool, waiting for her class to let out, I snag a bit of peace in the midst of my short paternity leave. My wife is home with our newborn. Our toddler has welcomed her sister by wailing in response to every little peep, crocodile tears streaming down her face. Our house is so loud, especially when both of our daughters get going. I am occasionally tempted to put my forehead on the dining-room table and join the chorus. Our God is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive . . .

This line from the Gospel isn’t a metaphor; the miracle of new life where none was before is as clear a sign of the creator God in the world as you’re likely to find. These are certainly alive and lively days for my wife and me as we navigate the reality of doubling the number of kids living with us.

Of course Jesus is talking in today’s passage about those at the other end of earthly life, when the noise and action have faded away. The dead are just as alive to God as our crying, obviously alive kids are to us. This is how precious each child is to the Father. The closeness he seeks with his children knows no boundary.

I like to think God’s pursuit of intimacy with his children also seeks out those places inside each of us that are deadened with apathy, fatigue, or selfishness. "Wake up,” God coaxes me when the kiddos have me at my wit’s end and I feel like quitting. “Don’t you know you are alive?”

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.
