33 So Pilate went back into the Praetorium and called Jesus to him and asked him, 'Are you the king of the Jews?'

34 Jesus replied, 'Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others said it to you about me?'

35 Pilate answered, 'Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you over to me: what have you done?'

36 Jesus replied, 'Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men would have fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. As it is, my kingdom does not belong here.'

37 Pilate said, 'So, then you are a king?' Jesus answered, 'It is you who say that I am a king. I was born for this, I came into the world for this, to bear witness to the truth; and all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice.'

For Love’s Sake Alone.

At first glance, the solemnity we observe today looks woefully outdated. Christ the King? Unless we live in a monarchy, we don’t do kings—right? And regardless of where we live, our prized individualism makes it hard for us to see why anybody would kneel before a monarch—even those glamorous and bejeweled creatures we become temporarily obsessed by every time Masterpiece Theater launches a new series.

Yet in our zealous embrace of modern democratic ideals, we have forgotten the original reason for kings. A king was supposed to exemplify the highest ideals of his people. His authority was bestowed on him by God, or so it was believed, and thus his responsibility to the nation was fearsomely weighty. The ceremony and ritual that surrounded him were not about “celebrity” but instead a sign of respect for the awesome role he fulfilled. Nobody in his right mind ever envied a king.

Nor did Jesus. And he made it abundantly clear that he had no kingly aspirations, neither on earth nor in heaven. What we honor in this solemnity is not some divine version of a golden-crowned, ermine-robed BBC monarch but Christ in the many impossible roles he took on for love and love’s sake alone: Only Begotten Son, Lamb of God, Wonderful Counselor, Prince of Peace, Savior of the World, Lord of All That Is and Ever Shall Be.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
