A Vision of Wonder and Mite.

Oh, to see and hear what John did in that heavenly revelation: dozens upon dozens of people (12,000 dozen to be biblically precise), creatures and elders, rushing water and claps of thunder, harps and hymns. And the Lamb, the Son of God enthroned on high. Some vision.

But some vision, as well, to see and hear the Incarnate Word, the One who shows us the face of God on earth. We meet him in the Gospels. He looked up in the Temple one day and saw the kingdom of heaven right in front of him. He saw it not in the costly adornments or in the apparently sizeable contributions of the wealthy people. Rather, Jesus noticed the kingdom of heaven in a quiet and unassuming widow. Just one humble woman and two small coins. It was all she had. She could give no more and would give no less. Call it the most memorable two cents’ worth ever given. Some gift.

And that’s the point.

We may not be in a financial position that allows us to jump-start an endowment, but God endows each of us with particular gifts. Our life’s task is to pay attention to those gifts and cultivate them, give them back to God in service of others. In doing so, we will see the face of God.

We must also call forth the gifts of those God sets in our path, encourage them and watch them grow. In their flourishing, we will surely see the face of God (and maybe our future boss!).

All that we have and all that we are is gift from God, whose Son gave his life for us and awaits us at the heavenly banquet. Some donor dinner! Christ at the center, waiting to accept us and our humble gifts. We’d give anything and everything to see Christ’s face and hear his voice.

And that’s the point.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
