Luke 21: 5-11.

5 When some were talking about the Temple, remarking how it was adorned with fine stonework and votive offerings, he said,

6 'All these things you are staring at now -- the time will come when not a single stone will be left on another; everything will be destroyed.'

7 And they put to him this question, 'Master,' they said, 'when will this happen, then, and what sign will there be that it is about to take place?'

8 But he said, 'Take care not to be deceived, because many will come using my name and saying, "I am the one" and "The time is near at hand." Refuse to join them.

9 And when you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be terrified, for this is something that must happen first, but the end will not come at once.'

10 Then he said to them, 'Nation will fight against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

11 There will be great earthquakes and plagues and famines in various places; there will be terrifying events and great signs from heaven.

A Life that Endures.

We’re in the final days of the liturgical year. As the year ends, it seems appropriate to think about the end of time, the time of fulfillment. From the book of Revelation we read about the harvest. The growing season is over, the grapes are ripe, and it’s time to cut them from the vine and send them to the winepress. It’s a good metaphor for the end times.

In our selection from Luke’s Gospel we read about Jesus’ final appearance in the temple as he comes to the end of his earthly mission. He warns his hearers about the last days when there will be destruction, deception, and confusion. Material wealth, enormous elegant buildings, even the temple, will not survive. The only thing that endures is a good life, a life of fidelity and virtue, a life of service and integrity.

The day of reckoning will come. This world will pass away. How much time do we have left before we need to get busy and reform our lives? Jesus’ words remind us that we can never know the how or when of it, so it does no good to worry. We do know that each of us will have our own day of reckoning when our time here is over. Each day of life is a gift, and we are to live it following the example of Jesus Christ, the Man for Others.

All Loving God

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,
