Luke 21: 20-28.

20 'When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you must realise that it will soon be laid desolate.

21 Then those in Judaea must escape to the mountains, those inside the city must leave it, and those in country districts must not take refuge in it.

22 For this is the time of retribution when all that scripture says must be fulfilled.

23 Alas for those with child, or with babies at the breast, when those days come!

24 'For great misery will descend on the land and retribution on this people. They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive to every gentile country; and Jerusalem will be trampled down by the gentiles until their time is complete.

25 'There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; on earth nations in agony, bewildered by the turmoil of the ocean and its waves;

26 men fainting away with terror and fear at what menaces the world, for the powers of heaven will be shaken.

27 And then they will see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

28 When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand.'

Longing to Meet Him.

Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

Today, across a confused world, men and women seek the real Christ of the Gospels, the one they have read about but cannot seem to find. In this seeking, men and women ask one another, “How do you find Christ? Where is he? Where can I find him?” It seems to me the answer is exceedingly simple: We meet Christ in a real Christian. Human beings have to be shown. The time of mere talking is over.

After his resurrection, Christ showed his disciples his wounds and they believed. These wounds were visible signs of Christ’s love for them—and for all of us. They saw his wounds of love and they believed. None of them needed to say anything. It was only Thomas the doubter who later spoke on seeing those wounds, “My Lord and my God!”

Today, it seems to me, we must likewise show the wounds of Christ to men and women, for only then will they believe. This is what men and women are seeking today: someone who will show them the wounds of Christ so that they may touch him and be reassured!

But we must go further. Christ prepared breakfast on the beach for his friends. We too, by our service, must show how much we love our brethren, all those who are seeking the Lord. We also must accept all human beings as they are, without wanting to change or manipulate them. It is a benediction and a joy in itself that they come to us.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
