12 Now it happened that Jesus was in one of the towns when suddenly a man appeared, covered with a skin-disease. Seeing Jesus he fell on his face and implored him saying, 'Sir, if you are willing you can cleanse me.'

13 He stretched out his hand, and touched him saying, 'I am willing. Be cleansed.' At once the skin-disease left him.

14 He ordered him to tell no one, 'But go and show yourself to the priest and make the offering for your cleansing just as Moses prescribed, as evidence to them.'

15 But the news of him kept spreading, and large crowds would gather to hear him and to have their illnesses cured,

16 but he would go off to some deserted place and pray.

So Much More.

After hearing the First Letter of John for almost two weeks now, we notice the author’s odd style—odd in that it is not organized by the kind of logic with which we’re familiar, and it seems repetitive. But as it moves on, the writer does bring n new elements, just as we do in a conversation when we say, “And besides . . .” or, “Another thing . . .”

Earlier, the author of First John told us that through faith we conquer the world; we are able to go beyond appearances to see the love and power of God behind it. Today a new point is made: “God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever possesses the Son has life. . . . I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God.”

Not only does faith overcome the world we visibly see by telling us of so much more; faith also assures that even now we have eternal life. Our life in and with God has begun. The faith and eternal life we already have are what enable many a Christian to survive devastating experiences, losses, or illnesses with the assurance that there is more to life than this car accident, this illness, or this disappointment. Thinking this way does not come easily. It isn’t a matter of a very strong and vivid imagination, but of a gift from God. This faith is nourished by practice and through our union with Christ at the altar.

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.
