29 And at once on leaving the synagogue, he went with James and John straight to the house of Simon and Andrew.

30 Now Simon's mother-in-law was in bed and feverish, and at once they told him about her.

31 He went in to her, took her by the hand and helped her up. And the fever left her and she began to serve them.

32 That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were possessed by devils.

33 The whole town came crowding round the door,

34 and he cured many who were sick with diseases of one kind or another; he also drove out many devils, but he would not allow them to speak, because they knew who he was.

35 In the morning, long before dawn, he got up and left the house and went off to a lonely place and prayed there.

36 Simon and his companions set out in search of him,

37 and when they found him they said, 'Everybody is looking for you.'

38 He answered, 'Let us go elsewhere, to the neighbouring country towns, so that I can proclaim the message there too, because that is why I came.'

39 And he went all through Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out devils.

But he still stepped aside for rest and prayer. He was careful to carve out time for the things that provided balance in life.

Making Time for Life.

In the face of demands on his time, Jesus showed a serenity that is nothing short of enviable. The first chapter of Mark, for example, notes that Jesus spent part of the day in a synagogue, after which he tended to the sick until well into the evening. Eventually he found time to sleep, but early the next morning he slipped away to pray. This was a familiar pattern, but so were the calls for help from his disciples and others. There were people to be cured and sermons to be preached.

A couple things seem remarkable. First, the pressure on Jesus was relentless, but he still stepped aside for rest and prayer. He was careful to carve out time for the things that provided balance in life. He was not willing to sacrifice a full life for the sake of a crowded calendar.

Notable too was how Jesus embraced the will of his Father. When the disciples tugged at his sleeve, he didn’t react in irritation. Instead he welcomed the opportunity to reach out to others. It was what he had come to do.

Out of love Jesus healed the sick and preached. But it was also out of love that he took time to eat with his disciples, to celebrate feasts, to take naps and to pray. For all of us who find such balance elusive or unnecessary, Jesus reminds us what a gift it is.
