1 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there,

2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited.

3 And they ran out of wine, since the wine provided for the feast had all been used, and the mother of Jesus said to him, 'They have no wine.'

4 Jesus said, 'Woman, what do you want from me? My hour has not come yet.'

5 His mother said to the servants, 'Do whatever he tells you.'

6 There were six stone water jars standing there, meant for the ablutions that are customary among the Jews: each could hold twenty or thirty gallons.

7 Jesus said to the servants, 'Fill the jars with water,' and they filled them to the brim.

8 Then he said to them, 'Draw some out now and take it to the president of the feast.'

9 They did this; the president tasted the water, and it had turned into wine. Having no idea where it came from -- though the servants who had drawn the water knew -- the president of the feast called the bridegroom

10 and said, 'Everyone serves good wine first and the worse wine when the guests are well wined; but you have kept the best wine till now.'

11 This was the first of Jesus' signs: it was at Cana in Galilee. He revealed his glory, and his disciples believed in him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and his brothers and his disciples, but they stayed there only a few days.

A Window into the Divine.

A wedding is a new song, a new creation marking the start of a deeply intimate relationship. I believe that’s why so much wedding imagery in Scripture points to the relationship God wants to have with us. When we say yes to God, as Mary did at the Annunciation, we receive a new identity. The angel called Mary, “favored one.” In Isaiah the new and lofty name that God gives us is “My Delight,” “Espoused.”

But we have a hard time believing that God loves us that much, that we are worthy of being loved so completely and unconditionally. We want to live so that God will rejoice in us, but when bad things happen to us, or we do bad things ourselves, we are prone to feel desolate or forsaken. It’s difficult to believe that all we need to do is love God and let God love us.

A wedding ceremony, like an icon, can be a window into a divine reality. Even in unlikely circumstances, God’s will to love us can break open our narrow world and cast a powerful light into our shadows. My own wedding was what my husband called a “.757 magnum wedding.” In a county courthouse, a justice of the peace found an armed deputy sheriff to be a witness, put out her cigarette, and began: “Dearly beloved.” And at that moment, the world changed. Ordinary words suddenly had the heady beauty, power, and sublime taste of the finest wine.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
