24 And the Pharisees said to him, 'Look, why are they doing something on the Sabbath day that is forbidden?'

25 And he replied, 'Have you never read what David did in his time of need when he and his followers were hungry-

26 how he went into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the loaves of the offering which only the priests are allowed to eat, and how he also gave some to the men with him?'

27 And he said to them, 'The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath;

28 so the Son of man is master even of the Sabbath.'

A Resounding Affirmation.

The story of Abraham is full of ironies and surprises. One of those is that the old man and his wife, long past their childbearing years, received the promise of life from God. The couple embraced the promise. They trusted God, and God blessed them with a new life, a life that signified abundance for all nations. The story is a strong reminder that everything we know about God exudes life.

In Jesus Christ we further learn that when death seems to win the day, God has the last word: life. We believe in the God of Life.

Like Abraham and Sarah, all humans partake of the same promise of life. The conception of every human person as well as the embrace of a new child in our lives, by birth or adoption, is a resounding affirmation that God remains faithful to the original promise. God continues to surprise us with life.

The irony in our day, however, is that many people in our society find it difficult to embrace this abundant gift as expressed in the form of a new human life. God renews the promise again and again, but many ears are deaf to it. Some even act against it.

God formed each of us in our mother’s wombs and calls us to "safeguard the dignity of every human life” (Collect). Every child—unborn, newborn, immigrant, youngster—exudes and reflects the Life of our Creator. Like Abraham and Sarah, may we have the wisdom to embrace and trust God’s everlasting promise.

All Loving God

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
