1 Another time he went into the synagogue, and there was a man present whose hand was withered.

2 And they were watching him to see if he would cure him on the Sabbath day, hoping for something to charge him with.

3 He said to the man with the withered hand, 'Get up and stand in the middle!'

4 Then he said to them, 'Is it permitted on the Sabbath day to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to kill?' But they said nothing.

5 Then he looked angrily round at them, grieved to find them so obstinate, and said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand.' He stretched it out and his hand was restored.

6 The Pharisees went out and began at once to plot with the Herodians against him, discussing how to destroy him.

The Order of Love.

You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

As a child, I remember turning this phrase over in my mind whenever it would surface at Mass. “What is the order of Melchizedek?” I wondered, “and how do you become a part of this apparently irreversible thing?”

Forever seemed like a long time to my young mind. The phrase felt like a guarantee, a promise of holiness. Somehow, if you played your cards right, you could become a part of this special order—you could become more like Jesus.

That desire for becoming is what draws hearts. It’s an unquenchable thirst for the Divine, a desire to embody the power of a life that cannot be destroyed, free of unbending rules, defined only by love.

That love is what heals the man with the withered hand. It’s also what pains Jesus so much as he grieves the hardness of those around him. Christ wants us to be free, to embody the love we encounter.

We’ve encountered this Christ, the king of peace, and are left wanting more. Jesus shows us what it means to be of the order of Melchizedek. His is a life of love, a calling not mandated by birth but answered in communion with others. It is love without beginning or end.

Without qualification, Jesus’ love brings to life what is withered within us. This is the sign of the great high priest, the one whose being blesses us and invites us to order our lives differently. The one whose love allows us to bring Love to life each day, so that we can become the priestly people we’re called to be.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.
