The Paradox of Freedom.

The concept of filial piety was ingrained in me before I could read. Love, respect, and devotion to parents and elders are enshrined in Chinese culture. Obediently yielding to the will of elders is a given. I saw a good many soap operas that focused on tragedies when career and marriage choices were misaligned with parents’ preferences. Going to the West for my education would mean freedom from such feudal obeisance.

In time, I would find the paradox of freedom. The Maryknoll sisters, whom I admire greatly and hold up as the paragon of independence and adventure, willingly submit themselves to their superiors in matters big and small. Two individuals promise to become one in marriage, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer. Americans, whose ancestors fought for their independence, pledge their loyalty to fraternities and political parties—sometimes in a wholesale fashion, thus surrendering their objectivity in favor of the party line. Some use their freedom for pursuits that dictate their lives: electronic gaming, binge-watching sports, incessant monitoring of social media.

We all give up our freedom, either for ill or good. The difference is whether we do so for self-indulgence, willful disregard of others, or for masters who are not worthy. Or whether we trade it in for a bigger freedom, as in, “thy kingdom come”—whereby love prevails, compassion rules, and we tend to each other as God tends to us.

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
