Mark 7:14-23

Jesus called the people to him and said, ‘Listen to me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that goes into a man from outside can make him unclean; it is the things that come out of a man that make him unclean. If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen to this.’

When he had gone back into the house, away from the crowd, his disciples questioned him about the parable. He said to them, ‘Do you not understand either? Can you not see that whatever goes into a man from outside cannot make him unclean, because it does not go into his heart but through his stomach and passes out into the sewer?’

(Thus he pronounced all foods clean.) And he went on, ‘It is what comes out of a man that makes him unclean. For it is from within, from men’s hearts, that evil intentions emerge: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within and make a man unclean.’

In the hymns we stand in awe of God who created the whole universe and yet uses that almighty power to care for the vulnerable. . . . The call to praise, in contrast to the cry of the lament, is not addressed to God. Instead we call out to everyone and everything we can think of to help us praise our great and powerful God. None of us is really capable alone of praising the awesome goodness of God. So first we summon up our own strength, then we call all believers, we call all nations. We call all creation. We even call all the angels, all heavenly beings. . . .

The call to praise always implies community. We are in this together. In the call to praise we take up our responsibility for the rest of creation, given to us in Genesis . . . We take up our responsibility to be the bridge between the rest of creation and God, we who are made of the clay of the earth and breathe with the breath of God (Gen 2:7).

We take up our responsibility to be the lungs for the earth. If we cut ourselves off from God, God’s life-giving breath, the whole earth suffocates. . . . Part of our responsibility is to bring all creation to praise God with us. So we call to all creation to praise God. We summon all people, all creation, because we are so aware that alone we could never give enough praise to God. As a result, we gather reinforcements.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
