Luke 6:17,​20-26

Jesus came down with the Twelve and stopped at a piece of level ground where there was a large gathering of his disciples with a great crowd of people from all parts of Judaea and from Jerusalem and from the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon. Then fixing his eyes on his disciples he said:

‘How happy are you who are poor: yours is the kingdom of God.
Happy you who are hungry now: you shall be satisfied.
Happy you who weep now: you shall laugh.

Happy are you when people hate you, drive you out, abuse you, denounce your name as criminal, on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice when that day comes and dance for joy, for then your reward will be great in heaven. This was the way their ancestors treated the prophets.

‘But alas for you who are rich: you are having your consolation now.
Alas for you who have your fill now: you shall go hungry.
Alas for you who laugh now: you shall mourn and weep.

‘Alas for you when the world speaks well of you! This was the way their ancestors treated the false prophets.’

Generally, I’m not all that concerned about the Gospel acclamation. I’m aware that the Alleluia is being sung by the music people. But the focus of my attention as I process to the ambo holding aloft the Book of the Gospels is to make sure I don’t trip and fall while negotiating the journey in that awkward pose wearing long vestments in an unfamiliar sanctuary, the fill-in, help-out world of a retired priest.

But today’s acclamation carries a whole world of meaning for me. It is from the Gospel of John, the one I most often use in the celebration of funerals. It is for me one of the most profound expressions of the Incarnation in all of Scripture.

The Incarnation, celebrated at Christmas, is the mystery of Christ in us, divinity filling and embracing our humanity in all its parts. There is no aspect of our humanity from which God is absent. The Lord is human in every way we are.

We encounter the Lord in the way we live: our family, our career, watching television, EVERYTHING. Our experience
of life is an ongoing experience of God. Even the truth of who we are is Christ in us. The Lord is familiar with being judged and condemned by his own people. The Lord knows well the burden of our sins he carries.

So, Christ in me processes to the ambo, book aloft, careful not to trip. Where is Christ in you?

Closing Prayer

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
