28 Now about eight days after this had been said, he took with him Peter, John and James and went up the mountain to pray.

29 And it happened that, as he was praying, the aspect of his face was changed and his clothing became sparkling white.

30 And suddenly there were two men talking to him; they were Moses and Elijah

31 appearing in glory, and they were speaking of his passing which he was to accomplish in Jerusalem.

32 Peter and his companions were heavy with sleep, but they woke up and saw his glory and the two men standing with him.

33 As these were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, 'Master, it is wonderful for us to be here; so let us make three shelters, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.' He did not know what he was saying.

34 As he was saying this, a cloud came and covered them with shadow; and when they went into the cloud the disciples were afraid.

35 And a voice came from the cloud saying, 'This is my Son, the Chosen One. Listen to him.'

36 And after the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. The disciples kept silence and, at that time, told no one what they had seen.

Everlasting Questions.

The Transfiguration story is the story of our own journey into the nature we were created to explore and inhabit. Into what the Eastern Church calls our deification. But wait: this is not to be a quiet, uneventful march into the sunset.

We who are to be melded into the divine and human life of the eternal Son will pass through that cleft in the rock through which his glory shines—just as he did, by sharing in the contradiction, pain, and abandonment that he is about to claim as his own.

Now, the question is . . . what questions do we ask of this? Have we become so accustomed to the incomprehensible reality of our destiny that we pass numb and accepting through this season of Lent, unmoved and even resentful?

“Where is God?” we ask. Where is the tender and allconsuming passion of God for his creation?

Where, why? And the everlasting question of suffering refuses to die a respectful death.

I remember an essay by Bede Jarrett in which he warns the reader that what he says is extravagant and semi-heretical, and still he says that our suffering is the mirror or manifestation of something within God; that in God, in the depths of the mystery of the divine, is an extravagance of love that can only be expressed in pain.

“I have loved you with an everlasting love.”

Is pain the flip side of that love, the inmost habitation of eternal desire, the urgent luminescence of that mountain encounter— the mount of glory and the mount of crucifixion?

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
