1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself would be visiting.

2 And he said to them, 'The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to do his harvesting.

3 Start off now, but look, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.

4 Take no purse with you, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road.

5 Whatever house you enter, let your first words be, "Peace to this house!"

6 And if a man of peace lives there, your peace will go and rest on him; if not, it will come back to you.

7 Stay in the same house, taking what food and drink they have to offer, for the labourer deserves his wages; do not move from house to house.

8 Whenever you go into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is put before you.

9 Cure those in it who are sick, and say, "The kingdom of God is very near to you."

10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not make you welcome, go out into its streets and say,

11 "We wipe off the very dust of your town that clings to our feet, and leave it with you. Yet be sure of this: the kingdom of God is very near."

12 I tell you, on the great Day it will be more bearable for Sodom than for that town.

17 The seventy-two came back rejoicing. 'Lord,' they said, 'even the devils submit to us when we use your name.'

18 He said to them, 'I watched Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

19 Look, I have given you power to tread down serpents and scorpions and the whole strength of the enemy; nothing shall ever hurt you.

20 Yet do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you; rejoice instead that your names are written in heaven.'

God’s mercy is much stronger than divine judgment. And so it should be, and still could be, with us. But it does call for holiness.

And So It Should Be.

Many of us remember the torment of confession and being corralled into church to confess sins, either repeated week after week or carefully fabricated to inject some innocent deviation from previous admissions. Raised amid a theology of excessive moral rigor and pessimism, we were often reminded of our inclination to sin and rarely told how much we were loved.

Today’s first reading evokes strong echoes of the church of my childhood.

It was therefore a great blessing to experience God’s love mediated through parents and family. Our parents were well aware of our sin, but they did not terrorize us or require weekly confession. They could wield justifiable punishment without recrimination or shaming.

In Rejoice and Exult (Gaudete et Exsultate), Pope Francis echoes Jesus, and indeed my own parents: “If we regard the faults and limitations of others with tenderness and meekness, without an air of superiority, we can actually help them” (72); “[St. Paul] suggests that we should try to correct ‘with a spirit of meekness.’ . . . In the church, we have often erred by not embracing this demand of God’s word” (73); “Reacting with meekness and humility: that is holiness” (74).

God’s call to holiness comes to us today through the prophet Daniel and Jesus. “Listen to him,” said the voice of Jesus at the Transfiguration. Today he reminds us of what we sometimes forget: that God’s mercy is much stronger than divine judgment. And so it should be, and still could be, with us. But it does call for holiness.

All Loving God

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
