1 After this Jesus travelled round Galilee; he could not travel round Judaea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him.

2 As the Jewish feast of Shelters drew near,

10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went up as well, not publicly but secretly.

25 Meanwhile some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, 'Isn't this the man they want to kill?

26 And here he is, speaking openly, and they have nothing to say to him! Can it be true the authorities have recognised that he is the Christ?

27 Yet we all know where he comes from, but when the Christ appears no one will know where he comes from.'

28 Then, as Jesus was teaching in the Temple, he cried out: You know me and you know where I came from. Yet I have not come of my own accord: but he who sent me is true; You do not know him,

29 but I know him because I have my being from him and it was he who sent me.

Between Fear and Passion.

What is really going on with Jesus in today’s Gospel? He had been teaching in Galilee, revealing his identity as the One who had come from God—to be living bread for the life of the world (John 6:35). But the Jews became angry with this teaching, for he was thought to be no more than a young man from Nazareth, a place too ordinary to produce a messiah.

Sensing the growing hostility, Jesus reacted like a hunted man: “He did not wish to travel in Judea, because the Jews were trying to kill him.” His family was upset, saying that if Jesus was who he claimed to be he should go with them to Judea and “show himself to the world” (John 7:4). Against their wishes, Jesus stayed in Galilee.

Or so they thought. After his family had left for Jerusalem, Jesus followed alone in secret. Arriving there, he went straight to the Temple area and began to teach openly, to the amazement of his listeners. So what’s up with that? He traveled in secret, then spoke openly without fear. “Yes, you know me and you know where I come from . . .” I am from God, and God sent me.

So what is going on with Jesus here? Quite simply, a struggle—between fear for his life and a passionate sense of mission. Jesus could not be who God sent him to be by giving in to fear. He simply could not remain silent. And “no one laid a hand on him.” Not yet anyway . . .

May our passion for the Christ-life abolish all hesitancy and fear in us for the sake of the Gospel.
