41 and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would the Christ come from Galilee?

42 Does not scripture say that the Christ must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, the village where David was?'

43 So the people could not agree about him.

44 Some wanted to arrest him, but no one actually laid a hand on him.

45 The guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't you brought him?'

46 The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like this man.'

47 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led astray?

48 Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the Pharisees?

49 This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are damned.'

50 One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus earlier -- said to them,

51 'But surely our Law does not allow us to pass judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearing and discovering what he is doing?'

52 To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets do not arise in Galilee.'

An Unsettling Presence.

As a hidden rock ripples the surface of a quick-flowing river, or an unseen sandbar causes ocean waves to crest and break, Jesus is sometimes revealed by the conflicts that erupt around him. Even though he is nowhere to be seen in today’s Gospel, his presence still causes divisions: one within the crowd (can this be the Christ?!), another between the guards and the chief priests and Pharisees (have you also been deceived?!), and a third that erupts when Nicodemus, himself a Pharisee as well as “a ruler of the Jews,” speaks up in Jesus’ defense.

It’s striking that it is Nicodemus who does so. The first time we met Nicodemus was when, to his great confusion, Jesus told him that he must be born again of “water and the Spirit.” To this Nicodemus responded with a plaintive question: “How can this be?”

But Jesus’ reply—that God loves this broken world so much that he gives everything, his only Son, for us—must have been hard at work, churning inside Nicodemus. Those words must have been unsettling in the extreme, capable of taking Nicodemus’s sturdy world apart stone by stone until he had the courage to stand up—a powerful man among powerful men—and risk being ridiculed and rejected.

This is the universal pattern of discipleship. It will happen to you and to me as it did to Nicodemus. There is first a coming to Jesus, an investigation. And then a confrontation when God’s ways clash with the world’s ways. And then we must choose: will we let the lingering words from our own encounters with Jesus rise up from within or not?
