31 The Jews fetched stones to stone him,

32 so Jesus said to them, 'I have shown you many good works from my Father; for which of these are you stoning me?'

33 The Jews answered him, 'We are stoning you, not for doing a good work, but for blasphemy; though you are only a man, you claim to be God.'

34 Jesus answered: Is it not written in your Law: I said, you are gods?

35 So it uses the word 'gods' of those people to whom the word of God was addressed -- and scripture cannot be set aside.

36 Yet to someone whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world you say, 'You are blaspheming' because I said, 'I am Son of God.'

37 If I am not doing my Father's work, there is no need to believe me;

38 but if I am doing it, then even if you refuse to believe in me, at least believe in the work I do; then you will know for certain that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.

39 They again wanted to arrest him then, but he eluded their clutches.

40 He went back again to the far side of the Jordan to the district where John had been baptising at first and he stayed there.

41 Many people who came to him said, 'John gave no signs, but all he said about this man was true';

42 and many of them believed in him.

Terror on Every Side.

In my distress I called upon the Lord who heard my voice.

When we pray this psalm in these stressful times, we might well ask: With whom does God stand in times of crisis? To whom does God respond? The very foundations of our society seem to be threatened by forces alien to us. But in a sense, there is nothing new under the sun.

The prophet Jeremiah speaks of whisperings and terror on every side. Jesus is considered a blasphemer by his own—this son of Mary and Joseph, poor and common folk, cannot possibly be the Son of God. He barely escapes stoning and arrest. In a way, the crowd’s animosity is understandable. How do we, with our human fears, doubts, and limitations, respond to acts of God in our midst? Can we even recognize them? Just as important, do we misidentify the “threat” and “terror” that surround us?

As we prepare these days for the impending death and resurrection of Jesus, we turn to him in our fear. We look to him for guidance in seeing what is wrong and immoral in God’s eyes. We stand with him when we challenge those who seek to injure, alienate, and destroy.

In our distress we look to the Lord Jesus Christ, the one who died to set us free from the threats of this world. Despite our denials, our inability at times to believe in or accept him, our God is faithful. God—our rock, our fortress, our salvation, our stronghold—truly hears our voice and answers our prayers.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
