9 Having risen in the morning on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary of Magdala from whom he had cast out seven devils.

10 She then went to those who had been his companions, and who were mourning and in tears, and told them.

11 But they did not believe her when they heard her say that he was alive and that she had seen him.

12 After this, he showed himself under another form to two of them as they were on their way into the country.

13 These went back and told the others, who did not believe them either.

14 Lastly, he showed himself to the Eleven themselves while they were at table. He reproached them for their incredulity and obstinacy, because they had refused to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.

Missing the Messenger.

Baked right into the New Testament is a familiar conundrum: how do we tell people about the good news? Today’s readings demonstrate how difficult that can be, as Peter and John find themselves in peril. They were released not because they spoke the truth, but because the authorities saw that the crowd was moved by the powerful sign of a healed man.

We often think of “evangelizing” as a one-way street, as something the insiders “do” to outsiders. But this ignores the need for the message to be received. Good preaching isn’t “good” in the abstract. It has to reach its audience. When the news is not heard, or it makes no sense to the recipient, or the delivery undercuts the message, evangelizing fails.

Sometimes the messenger herself has to get out of the way. Indeed, I have certainly had to accept that some very important insights need to be delivered to a given audience by someone else. Ouch. Parents know this well, of course (and we learn to “plant” our advice with a friendly aunt or uncle!). Another hard-won lesson has been the corollary: sometimes I am the intended recipient, and it turns out I’m not a very good one. I just don’t want to hear it . . . or at least I don’t want to hear it from you.

Mary Magdalene knew this entire dynamic. The first to whom the risen Christ appeared, her apostolic witness was derided and dismissed. Others, too, offered the good news and were not heard. Even today, Christ stands before us in many guises, and we brush these aside.

How many times, I wonder, has a modern-day Mary Magdalene tried to get my attention?

All Loving God

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.
