John 3: 1 - 8.

1 There was one of the Pharisees called Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews,

2 who came to Jesus by night and said, 'Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher; for no one could perform the signs that you do unless God were with him.'

3 Jesus answered: In all truth I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.

4 Nicodemus said, 'How can anyone who is already old be born? Is it possible to go back into the womb again and be born?'

5 Jesus replied: In all truth I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born through water and the Spirit;

6 what is born of human nature is human; what is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7 Do not be surprised when I say: You must be born from above.

8 The wind blows where it pleases; you can hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.

Partakers of the Divine Nature.

Nicodemus is ready to believe, but he is overcome by fear and does not despise the opinion of men. He refuses to be bold and is divided in two. O Nicodemus, faith is not what you think. The will of the Father is that humans participate in the Holy Spirit, that the citizens of earth are reborn into new life and are called citizens of heaven. When Christ calls the new birth of the Spirit a birth from above, he clearly shows that the Spirit is of the essence of God the Father, as indeed he says of himself, I am from above.

Since Nicodemus did not understand what being born from above meant, Christ instructed him with plainer teaching, giving him the knowledge of the Mystery. Our Lord Jesus Christ called the new birth through the Spirit from above, showing that the Spirit is of the essence above all essences through whom we become partakers of the Divine Nature. Through him and in him we are re-formed to the Archetype of Beauty, re-born into newness of life, and re-moulded to the divine sonship. But Nicodemus did not understand this and so the Saviour answered gently and, removing the veil that seemed to be thrown over his words, he said openly, Except a man be born again of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God. For since man is not simple in his nature but is composed of body and soul, he requires a two-fold healing for his new birth: by the Spirit the human spirit is sanctified; by the sanctified water, the body.

St. Cyril of Alexandria (d. 444) is a Doctor of the Church and one of the most important theologians of the early Church. He insisted that there is an inseparable unity between the divine and human natures of Christ, and that through our kinship with Christ we become children of God.
