Lord, Open My Lips.

Speaking God’s praise and truth is at the heart of today’s liturgy—from the entrance antiphon and prayers that call to mind the memorial of St. Athanasius, to the reading from Acts, followed by the responsorial psalm and Gospel. Having done a lot of speaking over the course of my career, I am drawn to the wisdom of these texts.

Early on, I learned to organize my thoughts, illustrate with stories, speak at the right pace, and engage my audience. I remember my first “important” presentation to the president and trustees of an institution. I wrote out the speech, practiced my delivery in front of a mirror, timed myself, and bought a new outfit.

But it was in my twenty years of work for two Catholic institutions that I came to realize my speaking is actually a ministry. My words must glorify God and speak the good news of God’s presence, love, and mercy for the well-being of all people. This recognition has changed the way I prepare my talks. I always start with the reading of Scriptures, reflecting on what is in my heart. I consciously connect to my audience as brothers and sisters on the same journey. I hope and pray that they hear what God wants them to hear despite my limitations as messenger.

Wherever I speak, I request a quiet spot fifteen minutes before I begin, a time and place to tune in to a hymn or psalm, to put myself in the presence of God. "Come, Holy Spirit,” I say as I step on the stage. And my prayer at the podium before I deliver my first word is the same prayer we use at the opening of Morning Prayer each day: “Lord, open my lips, and let my mouth proclaim your praise.”

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
