Jesus said to Thomas, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak
on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. We Christians put a lot of pressure on ourselves to believe. We say it defines us. It’s why we strive to do the right thing in our daily lives. It’s why we gather at church for Mass and worship. It’s why you’re reading this reflection, and why I’m writing it.
Our faith is part of a tradition and a heritage that’s been preserved and handed down through the centuries. Great saints have come before us and testified to God, sometimes with their lives, in the name of Jesus. We are to be salt and light in the world, shaping it for good, witnessing to hope and joy. It’s all quite overwhelming. It would be much easier, if only Jesus would show us the Father.
If only. Then we could finally be confident and upstanding in our faith. We believers, like Philip, tend to live our lives in this realm of “if only.” We create intricate conditions for our relationship with God that, perhaps subconsciously, we know likely will not happen. By convincing ourselves that God is just out of reach, we never have to face the fact that the Divine is already a part of us. It’s a savvy, if futile, attempt at staying in control of our spirituality; faith on our terms.
If only. If only we could alleviate this pressure that we put on ourselves. Faith is not something conditional, something to attain. Faith is a gift that brings forth a certain confidence born of the realization of how little we have to do, or can do, to be totally loved by God.

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy.
Hail, our life, our sweetness,
and our hope.
To you do we cry,
poor banished children of Eve.
