For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

Someone very dear to me is on the disorienting journey of dementia. As her memory slowly slips away, when I least expect it, she catches me by surprise with remarkable insight into life and relationships. There’s an inner core of wisdom, of holiness, that endures in the wake of this harsh disease. Living life with an openness to Jesus, the very Bread of Life, has formed in her a stillpoint in a life that has now gone off-balance. As with Stephen, there are clear signs that she experiences the divine presence in the midst of struggle as she continues to place her trust in the Lord (Psalm 31:7b).
We do so, too, as we join the crowd in seeking bread from heaven that is given in every reading of Scripture, in prayer, in love of neighbor, and most profoundly, in the Eucharist. Jesus has promised to meet us in all these ways. He has a way of surprising us, though, by showing up in unexpected ways and unexpected moments as well. For example, in my loved one’s moments of wise insight—gifts of grace to her and through her, to me and all those around her.
As we journey through the Easter season, reflecting on the many ways we have received bread from heaven, in expected and unexpected ways, can help us to stay awake to the movement of the risen Lord in our lives, to see Jesus among us, and to believe.
