Breads of Life.

“Everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life,” Jesus promises. But how do we encounter and believe in Jesus?

We find Jesus in Scripture, of which he famously said, “One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God” (Matt 4:4). Especially as we follow the Mass readings each day, and as we meditate on them, our faith becomes deeper and our longing for eternal life is stronger.

We meet Jesus in the people we encounter each day—those we love and those we find difficult to love. Isn’t it true that we can be Eucharist for each other? Jesus reminds us that “what you do for the least of these you do for me” (Matt 25:40). We know our involvement with those around us, the nearest and the stranger, goes far beyond simple charity when we see in them the face of our Lord.

In today’s Gospel, though, Jesus leads us into perhaps the most extraordinary challenge of understanding his presence: “I am the bread of life.” He will go on to say that when we eat his flesh and drink his blood, he remains in us and we in him, and we will live forever (John 6:51-58). That stopped many of his enthusiastic disciples. For many others, in Jesus’ time and onward, it has inspired deep spiritual exploration and devotion. And yet, how easy it is to receive the Body and Blood of Christ with superficial thanks and return to everyday life. Today, may I respond to this gift with attention and gratitude, and true eagerness to be mystically one with my Lord.
