Spectacularly Small.

A meteorite scientist with whom I work once suggested that the pyrotechnics leading to St. Paul’s conversion—the flash of light, the noise from the sky—was actually the fall of a meteorite. My friend is one of those folks who insists that miracles must always have some sort of natural explanation. But I don’t think his idea works. For one thing, meteorites have been witnessed by countless people over the course of human history, but there’s only been one St. Paul.

What’s worse, though, is that my friend also completely misreads the nature of Saul’s conversion. Some fabulous sign from heaven did not make Saul become a fanatical follower of the Lord. Saul was a fanatic when he went riding off to round up Christians. When he was on the road to Damascus, the sign from heaven made him stop being a fanatic.

Not every unusual event is a sign from God. Not every urging of the soul is an urge to do good. Indeed, one of the functions of a Church is to help us decide which of our urges are the ones to be followed. There’s no shortcut to decide these things for us. Sometimes we are asked to do hard things; but just because it is hard is no proof it is holy. Sometimes we are tempted to do flashy, spectacular acts; but more often it is the small, hidden actions that are the holiest.

And sometimes the hardest.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
