The feast of the Dedication was taking place in Jerusalem. It was winter. And Jesus walked about in the temple area on the Portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered them, “I told you and you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify to me. But you do not believe, because you are not among my sheep. My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”

This word to which we listen in the Easter Christ, and with him, is not a word coming from outside ourselves, an alien thing. It is spoken in the center of our being, because of the gift of the Spirit to us from the Easter Christ. The Spirit opens our hearts from within to receive the word, shapes our minds to the mind of Christ, drags us away from what is merely our own, unselfs us, makes us love the Father’s will, and so is at the heart of both our listening and our prayer. All our listening is done in the Easter Christ, through the gift of the Spirit who makes us listeners, as God’s children.
We have to wait in obedience, listening with an obedient heart to the Father’s word, because only the obedient heart can truly listen. If we have reservations, areas in our lives into which we are unwilling to admit God, we shall not be able to hear. The root of our prayer and of our whole life with God is an unconditional ‘Yes’ that does not necessarily understand all the time what is going on, but is still given. We have to be prepared to trust him and obey, unconditionally and all the time, in every area of our lives, in small things as well as great.
. . . We listen in our own hearts, individually, in prayer and experience. We listen also as a people, gathered together by the Spirit.

Maria Boulding (1929–2009) was a Benedictine nun of Stanbrook Abbey in England. She was a theologian, spiritual writer, and translator of the works of St. Augustine. She authored The Coming of God and edited A Touch of God.

Mary’s was a journey of faith just like ours. Though schooled in the traditions of her people, she was nevertheless astounded by the extraordinary intervention of God in her life.
May we emulate our Good Mother in her openness and commitment to Yahweh God seen through all the challenges and events of her life.

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy.
Hail, our life, our sweetness,
and our hope.
