50 and I know that his commands mean eternal life. And therefore what the Father has told me is what I speak.

Who Is Sent, and How Do We Know?

The Father sent Jesus into the world. The Church in Antioch sent Paul and Barnabas out on mission. Jesus said that whoever believed him also believed the one who sent him. Those who received Paul and Barnabas were in fact receiving Jesus, in whose name they were sent.

But how do we, today, know when God has sent someone to us? We must have faith in God’s action, which is carried out through the inspiration and direction of the Holy Spirit. We must also have confidence in the discernment we apply when we hear someone teach or when we observe that person’s actions and impact.

Sometimes we resist this discernment, either because we don’t want to be seen as judgmental or because we doubt our ability to do something so lofty as discernment. Thus, we listen to anyone and everyone but don’t commit fully to any teaching or leadership. At other times, we judge quickly but not with discernment so much as habit and comfort. If this person’s message is similar to what I already know, then surely it comes from God. If it upsets my understanding or makes me uncomfortable, it must not be right.

The critical factor? Prayer. Just as it was for Jesus and as it was for the early Church in Acts. True discernment emerges from communion, worship, time, and open hearts.
