Jesus’ “way and truth and light” is not a thing or a place or a commodity to obtain. It is a way of being in God, from whom we can never be separate.

Surrounded and Held.

In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.
As a child, I found this to be one of the most reassuring passages in Scripture. Jesus was going to die and was telling his disciples that when he got to heaven, he would prepare places for all of them. I imagined an enormous luxury hotel, with the disciples getting rooms near one another—and near Jesus.

These days, I wonder if the “many mansions” refers, not to a place, but to the largesse of God’s presence, a generosity of love available to everyone. A welcoming space with no one excluded. In this context, I hear Thomas’s questions differently: What does this mean? How will this happen? Jesus’ answer is mystifyingly simple: “Through me.” Whatever the question, the answer remains: “Through me. In me. With me.”

Jesus’ “way and truth and light” is not a thing or a place or a commodity to obtain. Rather, it is a way of being in God, from whom we can never be separate.

But we are often unaware of God’s presence, similar to water for a fish or oxygen for us. We hear the expression “hiding in plain sight,” and we realize that sometimes what we seek with all our hearts is right before our eyes, hidden beneath our preconceptions and stereotypes.

Conscious of this love that surrounds and upholds us, what might we see differently? Today, will it be another person, their goodness suddenly visible to us? Or a need of our global family? Or perhaps we will see the fragility and beauty of our own selves.

All Loving God

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.
