Behold the Center.

Some time ago I accompanied a group of Catholic schoolteachers on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. As we came down from Galilee, we traveled along winding roads, rocky plateaus, and wooded hills, until finally we came around a bend where the whole landscape opened before us. There was an audible gasp on the bus when, from the Mount of Olives, we saw in front of us the Old City of Jerusalem. In this small plot of land, which is only about 220 acres, we could behold the center of three monotheistic religions.

In addition to the Western Wall and the Temple Mount, the City holds within its walls the site of the crucifixion, which is now the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. When I first entered its doors, a friend leaned over to me and said, “This is the center of the world, for it is from this place that God has recreated the human race.”

In today’s readings the apostle John speaks of a new heaven, a new earth, and a new Jerusalem. He calls us to bring the pain of our present moment and to surrender it at the foot of the cross, not once, but every day. Faith involves believing that God can take all that is broken and make everything new. When the cross is our center, we open ourselves to a power that can turn sorrow into joy and even death into new life.
