‘Peace I bequeath to you, my own peace I give you,
a peace the world cannot give,
this is my gift to you.
Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.
You heard me say: I am going away, and shall return.
If you loved me you would have been glad to know that I am going to the Father,
for the Father is greater than I.
I have told you this now before it happens,
so that when it does happen you may believe.
I shall not talk with you any longer,
because the prince of this world is on his way.
He has no power over me,
but the world must be brought to know
that I love the Father
and that I am doing exactly what the Father told me.’

Today’s Gospel concludes Jesus’ Last Supper discourse. He knows what is coming, the hardship that awaits him and the trauma and loss that will shake and test the allegiance of his followers. To prepare them, he offers his peace, a foreshadowing of Pentecost where he will breathe on them and offer his peace once more. What is this peace, and how is Jesus’ giving of it so different from the way the world gives peace?

The way of the world’s peace might be summed up in an idiom made famous by Vince Lombardi, the American football coach who said, “It is my way or the highway.” What passes for peace in the world is really a form of dominating power. This was true in Jesus’ time and in our own. The Pax Romana, the Peace of Rome, was a form of worldly peace. This peace is achieved through compliance to the will of a dominant power, like an empire or a repressive government who only allows for a congenial environment on their terms.

Jesus offers a peace that does not repress or control. It is a freely offered invitation into a relationship of dignity, friendship, empowerment, and compassion. Peace is not enforced through ultimatums, manipulation, or the threat of violence. At the same time, it is not defined by the absence of hardship as Jesus, Paul, and every apostle around that supper table could attest. Instead, peace is found in abiding faith, knowing, trusting, and believing that no matter what happens or what we do or do not do, God is with us.
