27 Peace I bequeath to you, my own peace I give you, a peace which the world cannot give, this is my gift to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.

28 You heard me say: I am going away and shall return. If you loved me you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.

29 I have told you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen you may believe.

30 I shall not talk to you much longer, because the prince of this world is on his way. He has no power over me,

31 but the world must recognise that I love the Father and that I act just as the Father commanded. Come now, let us go.

Grounds for Growth.

If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father.

What better word to capture the Easter season than “rejoice!”? We bask these weeks in the glory of the risen Christ. Joy is on our lips and in our being.

Yet, for all that joy, we are still surrounded by conflict and violence, grief and division. How do we reconcile daily reality and resurrection?

We remember what Jesus tells his disciples at the Last Supper: Remember my love. Remember this peace. Remember the life it promises for the world.

Jesus knows that the peace he gives will soon seem like cruel abandonment. There will be suffering and death before there is resurrection and the gift of the Spirit.

God’s gifts often take time to be fully realized. These gifts mature, just as we do, taking on nuance and depth with time. Experience proves itself to be the grounds for growth. The same disciples who fearfully retreated from the passion emerged bearing Christ’s peace in the stories of Acts. Emboldened by faith, in the face of great opposition, they offered the peace of Christ.

In our fractured times, Christ’s abiding presence holds true, a peace that promises never to leave us. While we may not sense or remember his peace, Christ never forgets. The peace he’s given us remains—propelling us out into the world and deep into the heart of God, so that wherever we find ourselves we might be reminders to rejoice.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
