1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.

2 Every branch in me that bears no fruit he cuts away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes to make it bear even more.

3 You are clean already, by means of the word that I have spoken to you.

4 Remain in me, as I in you. As a branch cannot bear fruit all by itself, unless it remains part of the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.

5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, with me in him, bears fruit in plenty; for cut off from me you can do nothing.

6 Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a branch -- and withers; these branches are collected and thrown on the fire and are burnt.

7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for whatever you please and you will get it.

8 It is to the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit and be my disciples.

Fruit of the Vine.

As we journey through this Easter Season, reflecting on the impact of Christ’s ministry, suffering, death and resurrection, we find ourselves facing the question: What now? Christ has won the victory over sin and death, so what do I, as a disciple of Christ, do now? We exist to evangelize; it’s that simple. We exist to do what Paul did after his own conversion: go about and proclaim that Jesus the Christ is the Messiah, the Son of the living God.

Before we can evangelize properly we must be grafted onto the Vine that is Christ. In order to be fruitful in proclaiming the Lord, we can never be separated from the Lord or from each other. The image of Christ as the Vine, and we as the branches, expresses such a profound truth. Grafted together into the Christ, we live his Resurrected life, the same life which we extend to others.

The Church is not some kind of “pie-in-the-sky” utopia in which everything is sweetness and light, or a place in which we no longer encounter challenges and dangers. Paul, eventually revered as the great Apostle to the Gentiles, struggled mightily to overcome his past and to carry out his Christ-given mission. He endured shipwreck, imprisonment, rejection and martyrdom in his quest to proclaim the Risen Christ to the world. Some Christians, even St. Peter, often struggled with him. Yet through it all, they remained in communion with each other, grafted strongly onto the Vine of Christ.

The work of evangelisation is primarily the work of the Holy Spirit. It was the Spirit who was the source of Jesus’ prophetic authority to announce the coming of the kingdom through signs and wonders.
Jesus has promised to send us the Spirit to be with us in all our endeavours.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.
