Good Fridays.

Five weeks ago, today, we exalted the Holy Cross on high, declaring: Behold the wood of the Cross, on which hung the salvation of the world!

Five weeks into Easter, we exalt the Crucified One once again, declaring in the Entrance Antiphon of today’s liturgy: Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and divin¬ity, and wisdom and strength and honor, alleluia.

We might ask: what does Good Friday have to do with this Friday of the Fifth Week of Easter? Like any curious spiritual Eastertime question, this one can lead us more deeply into the mysteries of our faith.

In the Crucified One, the emptiness of God incarnate, we are able to see the impossible made possible. Thus, the possibility of possibility becomes another name for resurrection.

The ravishment of Christ Crucified is the extreme of pain and the extreme of love made manifest in history. It becomes the commandment for the friends of God, to love as Christ loves, even the enemy: another seeming impossibility for humans. This gives new meaning to the work of the Holy Spirit, another name for grace. Every Friday is Good Friday . . . some may remember the days when we kept each Friday meatless, in fasting and prayer. And, yet, every day is Easter because we live in the “perpetual power” of the paschal mysteries, another name for paradox. Resurrection, grace, paradox . . . another name for the power and divinity, wisdom and strength and honor of the Lamb. Two Fridays—one excess of love.

All Loving God

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.
