26 When the Paraclete comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who issues from the Father, he will be my witness.

27 And you too will be witnesses, because you have been with me from the beginning.

1 I have told you all this so that you may not fall away.

2 They will expel you from the synagogues, and indeed the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is doing a holy service to God.

3 They will do these things because they have never known either the Father or me.

4 But I have told you all this, so that when the time for it comes you may remember that I told you. I did not tell you this from the beginning, because I was with you;

“Come, and Stay at My Home”

Hospitality is a core value for Benedictines. Today Lydia shows us that hospitality is important because it builds up the Church. The Lord opens her heart, and she welcomes the Word. As she herself is welcomed into the Church, now she welcomes the Church into her life and into her home.

How welcoming are our churches? How welcoming are our homes? If Christ’s redemptive act is to bear fruit, we must go to the margins and invite people to share in the joy of knowing Jesus as Lord of our lives. If the Church is built up by hospitality, it cannot be just a members-only club for the comfortable. Welcoming people is a critical part of evangelization. Young people, in particular, need to be welcomed. Do we know the young people of our parishes? Would we miss them if they weren’t there? Who isn’t at our table who could be fed by the riches of our deep spiritual tradition? How can we invite them to the true feast of the sacraments, the mystical writers, the transformed life that comes with a rooted habit of prayer? How can we begin to share these riches and invite people to share in the abundance? Hospitality asks so many questions of us.

Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit, who comes from the Father and gives us courage to live our faith in the face of rejection. Like Lydia, like the apostles, we are called to testify, to tell the truth to the world: God loves us and invites us to more life than we can imagine.

God has gifted everyone with the ability to create and wants us to bring creation to fruition. Looked at in this way the world presents itself to us as a space to exercise our freedom where nothing exists in its final form. Human beings can only “become” human and reach their potential when they get involved in a world marked by a continuous process of creation…
Creation is “crying out in one great act of giving birth”. This is God’s reminder to us that the creation continues eternally.

Closing Prayer

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
