Jesus said to his disciples: “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy. When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world. So you also are now in anguish. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. On that day you will not question me about anything. Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.”

We live in a difficult period of history, one that confronts us with threats to health and happiness and even the survival of humanity. Wars rage around the globe, epidemics arise more often, economies seem fragile, and climate disasters are frequent and more destructive.
These things can shake our faith. Is God with us in our time? Will God’s kingdom ever come? How are we to cope with so much disruption in our lives? The Lord says to Paul, “Do not be afraid . . . for I am with you.” That didn’t exempt Paul from problems and threats to his life, but it offered him a reason for hope and perseverance. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks directly to us: “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.”
Pope Francis spoke of our era this way: “One could say that today we are not living an epoch of change so much as an epochal change. The situations that we are living in today
therefore pose new challenges which, at times, are also difficult for us to understand. Our time requires us to live problems as challenges and not as obstacles: the Lord is active and at work in our world” (Nov. 10, 2015). Notice how often Francis smiles, despite the problems he sees daily.
The joy that Jesus offers flows from a deep conviction that God is with us. We may suffer many trials in our lives, but Jesus invites us to trust in God’s presence and live in a joy that no one can take from us.

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy.
