Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed, saying: “Holy
Father, I pray not only for them, but also for those who
will believe in me through their word, so that they may all
be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also
may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.
And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they
may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that
they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world
may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even
as you loved me. Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that
where I am they also may be with me, that they may see my
glory that you gave me, because you loved me before the
foundation of the world. Righteous Father, the world also
does not know you, but I know you, and they know that you
sent me. I made known to them your name and I will make
it known, that the love with which you loved me may be in
them and I in them.”

If you’re a Beatles fan (and who isn’t) you may remember the
verse that begins their 1967 hit, “I Am the Walrus.” I think
of it every time I read today’s passage from John’s Gospel.
The clever, lyrical use of the pronouns I, you, me, they, them,
us, and we, are similar to the way the pronouns are used in
the Beatles song. In these lyrics, the I, you, we, and me are all
kind of mashed together to form a united identity.
The big question that the Beatles song generated was: Who
is the walrus? Is it John, Paul, George, or Ringo? The big ques
tion John’s Gospel generated was: Who is Jesus? Is he God or
human?
After three hundred years of debate, the Gospel question
was settled. The Council of Nicaea declared doctrinally that
Jesus was both God and human. And, as Vatican II declares,
“By his incarnation the Son of God has united himself in
some fashion with every human being” (Gaudium et Spes 22).
So the communion of divinity and humanity, realized in
Jesus, is shared with us. That’s what we celebrate in the
Eucharist.
So while the debate may rage as to who is the walrus,
there’s no doubt about who Jesus is. He’s in us and we are him
and you are us and we are all together.

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy.
Hail, our life, our sweetness,
and our hope.
