11 I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep those you have given me true to your name, so that they may be one like us.

12 While I was with them, I kept those you had given me true to your name. I have watched over them and not one is lost except one who was destined to be lost, and this was to fulfil the scriptures.

13 But now I am coming to you and I say these things in the world to share my joy with them to the full.

14 I passed your word on to them, and the world hated them, because they belong to the world no more than I belong to the world.

15 I am not asking you to remove them from the world, but to protect them from the Evil One.

16 They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world.

17 Consecrate them in the truth; your word is truth.

18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world,

19 and for their sake I consecrate myself so that they too may be consecrated in truth.

As We Listen In.

If you had the chance to script the last paragraphs you would speak before dying, what would you say and to whom would you most wish to speak?

Today, we hear parts of Paul’s last message to his friends in Ephesus and Jesus’ farewell to his friends gathered at his Last Supper. Like a dying parent who knows they will not be around for their children in the trials to come, both Paul and Jesus show more concern for those they love than for themselves. Paul encourages his disciples to keep watch over themselves and one another. Jesus asks the Father, “Keep them in your name so that they may be one.”

Neither Jesus nor Paul speaks about their accomplishments; they focus on their friends and the mission they are leaving them. They don’t mention the details of the mission but focus on its goal: their friends’ relationship with God.

They don’t say they are worried about their friends, yet there are things they must express. Paul says, “I commend you to God who has the power to build you up.” Speaking to the Father, Jesus reveals what he wants the disciples to know about his hopes for them.

As we listen in, we know that Jesus and Paul are speaking to us as well. They understand that evil lurks and looks to lure us in, so they remind us that we are consecrated, made Christlike. Their final message is that we are able to live up to their hopes for us.

Closing Prayer

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
