Matthew 18: 1-7, 10.

At this time the disciples came to Jesus and said, 'Who is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven?' So he called a little child to him whom he set among them. Then he said, 'In truth I tell you, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven.
And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven.
'Anyone who welcomes one little child like this in my name welcomes me.
But anyone who is the downfall of one of these little ones who have faith in me would be better drowned in the depths of the sea with a great millstone round his neck.
Alas for the world that there should be such causes of falling! Causes of falling indeed there must be, but alas for anyone who provides them!
'See that you never despise any of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven are continually in the presence of my Father in heaven.

Does It Really Matter?

Today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles describes a contentious meeting of various groups in the early Church. There was “a great uproar,” and the dispute was so serious that the commander who had convoked the meeting was afraid Paul would be torn to pieces.

This was not a nice and polite gathering, and it did not seem to follow any rules of order. It was the kind of meeting that has become ever more frequent today. In our churches, in our schools, in the panels of pundits, and in political gatherings of every size we are seized by disagreements that seem ever more destructive. Culture wars and tribal differences are tearing our religious and political communities to pieces.

Paul knew that he had caused this fracas when he expressed his hope in resurrection from the dead. It was an uproarious dispute, but it was about something very important. It mattered whether people believe in resurrection or not.

This should give us pause. Are our disagreements really about something that matters, or are they simply opportunities to vent our anger?

In the midst of the great uproar of our times, today’s Gospel invites us to pray with Jesus. He prayed that all would be one so that the world might believe. He did not pray that all would agree or that all would think and act in the same way. He prayed that all would be one. Let us take this prayer to heart.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
