As Ministers.

In everything we commend ourselves as ministers of God.

Paul’s encouragement to his fellow workers in Corinth can also give courage to believers today. Around the world, some Christians endure vicious persecution on par with the persecutions of early followers of Christ—beatings, imprisonments, and worse. Others, blessed with lives of comfort and living in societies that tolerate religious expression, can barely imagine what it would be like to be forced to risk life or safety in order to express or experience faith. Afflictions and hardships and labors often come in other forms, such as everyday challenges in work, relationships, and health. In the realm of faith, there may be social ostracism for expressing an unfashionable opinion grounded in Jesus’ teachings or for remaining a member of a Church that has looked away from faith-shattering abuse of children and protected the abusers instead.

Whether our “everything” is monumental or mundane, we can try to discern what God is inviting us to do as ministers of God. We can ask what we might be called to do as God’s hands and feet and coworkers—and then set about trying to do it.

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
