1 'Be careful not to parade your uprightness in public to attract attention; otherwise you will lose all reward from your Father in heaven.

2 So when you give alms, do not have it trumpeted before you; this is what the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win human admiration. In truth I tell you, they have had their reward.

3 But when you give alms, your left hand must not know what your right is doing;

4 your almsgiving must be secret, and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.

5 'And when you pray, do not imitate the hypocrites: they love to say their prayers standing up in the synagogues and at the street corners for people to see them. In truth I tell you, they have had their reward.

6 But when you pray, go to your private room, shut yourself in, and so pray to your Father who is in that secret place, and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.

16 'When you are fasting, do not put on a gloomy look as the hypocrites do: they go about looking unsightly to let people know they are fasting. In truth I tell you, they have had their reward.

17 But when you fast, put scent on your head and wash your face,

18 so that no one will know you are fasting except your Father who sees all that is done in secret; and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.

A Little Act of Charity.

I remember an act of charity that God inspired me to do when I was still a Novice. It was a small thing, but our Father who sees in secret, who looks at the intent rather than at the greatness of the action, has already rewarded me for it without waiting until the next life. It was at the time that Sister St. Peter was still going to the choir and the refectory. At evening prayers she was placed in front of me. Ten minutes before six o’clock, a Sister had to take the trouble to guide her to the refectory [the dining room], because at that time the nurses had too many other patients to come get her.

It cost me a lot to offer myself to render that little service, because I knew that it wasn’t easy to make poor Sister St. Peter happy, she who was suffering so much that she didn’t like to change guides. . . . It was a matter of taking Sister St. Peter to her seat and of acting nimbly so as not to hurt her. Then I had to roll back her sleeves (again in a certain way), and then I was free to go. With her poor crippled hands, she would arrange her bread in her bowl as best she could. I soon noticed this, and each evening, I left only after having rendered this one more little service to her. Since she hadn’t asked me to do this, she was very touched by my attention, and it was through this means, which I hadn’t sought out on purpose, that I gained her good graces completely, and especially (I found this out later) because after cutting her bread, before leaving her I would give her my most beautiful smile.

Beloved Mother, perhaps you were surprised that I’m writing you about this little act of charity that happened such a long time ago. Oh! If I did so, it’s because I feel that because of it I have to sing of the mercies of the Lord: He deigned to leave me with this memory, like a perfume that leads me to practice charity.
