19 'Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moth and woodworm destroy them and thieves can break in and steal.

20 But store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where neither moth nor woodworm destroys them and thieves cannot break in and steal.

21 For wherever your treasure is, there will your heart be too.

22 'The lamp of the body is the eye. It follows that if your eye is clear, your whole body will be filled with light.

23 But if your eye is diseased, your whole body will be darkness. If then, the light inside you is darkened, what darkness that will be!

Breaking Open The Word

Jesus asks us to look at life with the eyes of faith and with that light we will be able to see what to treasure.

Lasting Treasure.

When we think of “treasure,” we most often think of something valuable. We treasure a piece of beautiful jewelry inherited as a family heirloom, or we treasure other material possessions we have worked hard to earn.

In today’s Gospel, however, Jesus challenges us to reflect more deeply on the things we hold dear. He warns us that whatever we hold onto can consume us and fundamentally define us. He cautions very strongly against material possessions because they are passing. They can “decay” or be stolen.

What else are we to treasure? Perhaps a longtime, faithful friend who has traveled with us through the ups and downs of our life. Or the profound words of wisdom given by a mentor years ago, wisdom we still live by. Or the gift of love in our lives. Jesus asks us to look at life with the eyes of faith and with that light we will be able to see what to treasure.

Having presided at many funerals over the years, I know that the death of a loved one is not the death of love. When someone dies, the great gift of their love remains. It heals and gives life even in their absence.

So maybe we can value the people who love us, and love them even more. And we can remember the one who first loved us, God our creator. And we can share that love with someone who needs it the most today: the broken, wounded, lost, or lonely. “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.”

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
