At Odds with the World.

“Let the dead bury their dead.” The saying stings. It rubs hard against human sensibilities. It would have been just as abrasive in Jesus’ day. The first obligation of Jewish children was to give their parents a proper burial. It was the final act in fulfilling the commandment to “honor your father and mother.” What Jesus says at the beginning of the Gospel is equally difficult. Foxes and birds have a place to call home at the end of the day. Jesus does not. And he seems to say this will also be true for his followers. Now maybe this is not meant to be taken literally. Some things Jesus says are simply meant to shock in order to get our attention. “If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out” is one example (see Matt 5:29).

So are Jesus’ followers literally supposed to turn their backs on bed, board, and family? Today, as we listen carefully to Jesus’ words, he removes illusions of what a life of faith means. Faith means casting our lot with Jesus and entering a tough course, a narrow path. There are times when faith will set us at odds with the world. But as the book of Hebrews reminds us, “Here we have no lasting city, but we seek the one that is to come” (13:14). The values and visions of the Gospel do not always match the values and visions around us. We have confidence that God remains faithful to Jesus and, in him, gives us life.

The Founder’s last Testament identifies the three elements that make up the core of his spirituality and that of his Little Brothers (and all Marists): confidence in God’s presence, devotion to Mary and reliance on her protection, and the practice of humility and simplicity.
May we always treasure that relationship with Jesus and Mary that Marcellin passed on to the early Brothers.

All Loving God

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
