25 So they went to him and woke him saying, 'Save us, Lord, we are lost!'

26 And he said to them, 'Why are you so frightened, you who have so little faith?' And then he stood up and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.

27 They were astounded and said, 'Whatever kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?'

Stand Firm.

How does the world feel to you today?

Is fire falling all around? Is rage consuming entire communities? Are thunderclouds roiling and torrents swamping the lifeboats?

Yet perhaps, like the psalmist, does your foot stand firm on level ground amid an incendiary atmosphere and a deluge of trouble? I walk in my integrity, says the psalmist, despite a firestorm.

What could be the source of such equanimity?

Don’t answer the question too fast. God is not a facile fix to a wicked problem.

God is redemptive power in the guise of insignificance. Zoar, the name of Lot’s little refuge town, means insignificance, a word that also could describe Nazareth and the Nobody who came from there.

Nobody knew what sort of man he was. Well, the winds knew, the waves knew, once they’d quit their demonic panicking and laid down their destructive arms.

Don’t pick them up. Don’t catch fire. Don’t add another howl or bucket of tears to the storm. Be insignificant today—not invisible or silenced, not self-effacing or ashamed, but not inflammatory either, and not blusterous.

Be calm. Like the sea after Jesus tells it the truth. Like disciples accepting their salvation.

Walk, then, in your own integrity, in the wholeness of a life whose pieces are held together by faith, whose appearance on the outside matches its interior reality. Such a soul stays intact no matter how hot the fires burn, how hard the winds blow, how unrelenting the rain.

Closing Prayer

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Release in us wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement for your work in which we share.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
