Matthew 9: 1- 8.

1 He got back in the boat, crossed the water and came to his home town.

2 And suddenly some people brought him a paralytic stretched out on a bed. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, 'Take comfort, my child, your sins are forgiven.'

3 And now some scribes said to themselves, 'This man is being blasphemous.'

4 Knowing what was in their minds Jesus said, 'Why do you have such wicked thoughts in your hearts?

5 Now, which of these is easier: to say, "Your sins are forgiven," or to say, "Get up and walk"?

6 But to prove to you that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins,' -- then he said to the paralytic-'get up, pick up your bed and go off home.'

7 And the man got up and went home.

8 A feeling of awe came over the crowd when they saw this, and they praised God for having given such authority to human beings.

And God still seeks peacemakers. God’s family always has room for more sons and daughters, more saints who make peace.

The Poetry of Peacemaking.

Many people, you soon discover, simply do not want peace. Peace scares them. It threatens their pride. So, despite the consequences, they cherish their anger, harbor their grudges, and hold on, ever so ferociously, to their hostilities. They would, it seems, rather fight than love. And no matter who gets hurt!

It is a sad, sad story. And, pathetically, it is not simply the story of playgrounds and apartments. It is also the story of classes and cultures, labor and management, men and women, nations and races. It is what happens when any person or group wants something at the expense of another. And it is the story of humankind, humankind at war with God.

War is sin. And sin is war, war against a God who bothers us, bothers us by being generous and demanding. And we don’t like that. We want to live our own lives, without any interference. We like our little wars, and our big ones, too. They make us feel important, powerful, godlike.

Nevertheless, God will not let us alone. God sent the prophets to Israel, seeking to make peace, to create shalom. And God sent Jesus, as a peacemaker, to bring peace.

And God still seeks peacemakers. God’s family always has room for more sons and daughters, more saints who make peace. It may be difficult and hazardous, challenging the pride of nations and empires. Or it may be as simple and reassuring as reaching out a friendly hand to your neighbor. There is a creativity, even poetry, at work in peacemaking. And once peace begins, begins to work among us, who knows what may happen?

Marcellin recognised as did the disciples the reality that Jesus is ‘in the boat’ with us even at our darkest times.

All Loving God

Cultivate in us a spirituality that flows out of Marian simplicity, humility and modesty.

Help us set our gaze on those people and places most in need of Christlife,

Impel us to respond together,

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we listen for your invitation,

Like Mary, we set out joyfully and in haste to the hill country of the lives of young people,

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
