Matthew 9: 18-26.

18 While he was speaking to them, suddenly one of the officials came up, who bowed low in front of him and said, 'My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her and her life will be saved.'

19 Jesus rose and, with his disciples, followed him.

20 Then suddenly from behind him came a woman, who had been suffering from a haemorrhage for twelve years, and she touched the fringe of his cloak,

21 for she was thinking, 'If only I can touch his cloak I shall be saved.'

22 Jesus turned round and saw her; and he said to her, 'Courage, my daughter, your faith has saved you.' And from that moment the woman was saved.

23 When Jesus reached the official's house and saw the flute-players, with the crowd making a commotion, he said,

24 'Get out of here; the little girl is not dead; she is asleep.' And they ridiculed him.

25 But when the people had been turned out he went inside and took her by the hand; and she stood up.

26 And the news of this spread all round the countryside.

Those who disregard all things and follow Christ snatch it away ...Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom (Matt 5:3).

A Stolen Touch.

There are four types of people who possess the Kingdom of heaven. Some snatch it away with violence, others purchase it, others steal, and others are forced to it. Those who disregard all things and follow Christ snatch it away; concerning these it is said, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven [Matt 5:3].

There are others at a lower stage, by whom carnal things are harvested while spiritual things are sown for them, and to these the Lord says in the gospel, Make friends for yourselves from the wealth of iniquity so that when you fail, they might receive you into everlasting dwellings [Luke 16:9]. These types are called merchants, because, in the present, they give away whatever temporal goods they possess so that they may receive eternal goods from them in the future, which they would not possess at all if not through them. . . .

There are others who do some good secretly for which they merit the Kingdom of Heaven, but still they are said to steal it because, avoiding human praise, they are content with the divine witness alone. The woman in the gospel held the example of these; she, who suffered from a flow of blood, thought within herself, saying, If I shall touch the hem of his garment, I shall be healed [Matt 9:21]. Having said this, she approached secretly and touched, and she became saved.

There are others who are forced: for example, those who are poor by necessity, who are indeed tested in this fire of poverty. . . . Concerning them it is written, Compel them to come in so that my house may be filled [Luke 14:23]. For many are compelled when they are afflicted by various privations and oppressions; by God’s wonderful providence, while they flee temporal death, once turned to God, they obtain eternal life.

And lead us to be in communion with one another, and with you.

Like Mary, we build communities in ways that are Christ-centred.

All Loving God, come and live in our hearts.
